west coast vacation, you must go to Tofino on the west coast of
Vancouver Island - it is absolutely breathtaking (see photos this
page). Besides the kayaking and hiking shown, we also did a little
mountain biking, some fine dining and a lot of relaxing. Our trip began at the Himwitsa Lodge, a nice, new place right in Tofino. We were supposed to spend a night out at Hot Springs Cove, but there was a fire at the motel there so we extended our stay in town. Next we drove across the island to Victoria to catch the |
ferry to Pender Island where we stayed at the Cliffside Inn On-the-Sea.
The other three rooms at this B&B were also occupied by honeymooners.
Another quick ferry trip took us to Mayne Island where we stayed
at the luxurious Oceanwood Country Inn. It was the vacation of our lives (so far) and we definitely needed it after a very busy spring and summer. Once we returned to Vancouver, however, the first day of school (for both of us) was right around the corner! |

| be a great party. Contrary to popular opinion, you really can
enjoy your own wedding. We've been married two and a half years
and we are still as madly in love (ooh, gross) as we were on our
first date on September 30th, 1987! The very next day we flew home and spent a couple of days in Vancouver. Next, we were off to beautiful Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands for an incredible ten day honeymoon. If any of you ever get around to taking a |

| After spending an exhausting summer of '95 preparing for the
wedding, Trudy went for broke in '96. All but about ten days were
spent off vacationing while David busily worked on his PhD thesis. Trudy's summer started off on July 3rd hiking the West Coast Trail. David was supposed to come along, but a bad ankle sprain prevented him from joining us. The trail runs along the west coast of Vancouver Island through a rain forest. The main challenges of this famous trail are usually presented by the rain - knee deep mud and slippery rocks, roots, logs, boardwalks and ladders can make for |
some spectacular (and sometimes dangerous) wipeouts. Our party (seven teachers from Crofton House) was blessed with perhaps the best weather on record for the trail. Each day's hike was physically demanding (especially with a 700 kilo pack on your back!). We only planned a half-day's hike on the first day and arrived at our campsite around noon. It was a beautiful sunny day and our site was on a Pacific Ocean beach with a huge waterfall pouring off of the high cliff. There was a grey whale playing for several hours right in front of our sight. We could hardly figure out | when to go to sleep because it seemed as if the sun would never
set. The rest of the five day trip was pretty much the same. All
in all, a fantastic experience. Trudy arrived home on Monday afternoon and, after a last minute phone call, was off again Wednesday morning. A friend's parents were short of crew for a regatta down on Whidbey Island (in Washington state). The regatta featured beautiful weather, three days of good racing (100 boats altogether) and her two favourite words: FREE BEER! Our boat, Coho, ended up finishing second in a fleet of fourteen boats. Trudy then spent |

| almost an entire week at home in Vancouver getting the house in order and playing outside - hiking, biking etc. Next, it was off to Hood River, Oregon for a psychology conference for David. Trudy spent the conference time windsurfing, biking, hiking and running. David joined her for a day of summer skiing (see photo this page) and a little biking. Back home again for three or four days and it was off to Toronto where we ate, drank and partied way too much for 17 days (10 days for David). The best part, as always, was spending time | with our niece and nephews. So David is back in Vancouver hard at work when Trudy arrives home from Toronto for a few days. Next stopthe east Kootenays to stay with Bridget's (teacher at Crofton) parents. The Anakins live in Windemere which is quite close to the Alberta border and a good ten hour drive from Vancouver. Here she does even more biking, hiking, canoeing and, of course, eating and drinking. David had a productive summer working on his thesis and Trudy had one of her best summers ever. |
