| In this illusion, stimuli presented later in time affect the perceived location of stimuli presented earlier. The basic stimuli consist of four clicks (presented via headphones) localized to the left of space followed by four clicks localized to the right of space. When the interval between the clicks is less than about 120 ms the eight clicks are perceived as equally spaced between the two extreme positions. Our working hypothesis is that when the stimuli are presented in close temporal proximity, the perceptual system groups them together and thus interprets the sound source as moving through space. This paper (Shore, Hall & Klein, 1998) focuses on a new method for measuring the range of inter-click intervals (ICIs) for which the illusion is experienced. | ||||||||
| The illusion is only noticable with stereo sound and will be enhanced by the use of headphones. Use the text links if no control panels appear. |

Newer browsers will often know what to do with these WAV sound files and, hopefully, you'll be presented with a small control panel for each sound file. If this is the case, you can simply press the play button. If the sound control panels don't appear, clicking on the text link should cause the sounds to play - either in the frame below or in a new, small window. Older browsers may not know what to do with these files. If this is the case with your browser, it should ask you if you want to save the file. You can save it and hopefully play it with an application that you already have, or download a freeware or shareware WAV sound player. Apple's New QuickTime 3.0 is an excellent solution for playing both audio and video from the web. |
